Over 60 million primary school-aged children around the world do not have opportunities to receive education and learn to read or write. Room to Read - an international non-profit organization - has worked to diminish the numbers of uneducated children through the world since their foundation in 2000. Room to Read was an organization spurned from serene Nepali cities where they started out by bringing books to rural communities. Since then they have become a global organization dedicated to providing eduction opportunities to children through programs supporting literacy and gender equality. They work primarily with communities and local governments throughout Africa and Asia to help develop the literacy skills and reading habits of primary school children, while still supporting girls to complete secondary school with life skills that will positively influence their future.
"We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world."
International operations run by Room to Read remain true to the culture of their region as they are each run entirely by local staff who are familiar with the challenges, customs and languages of the country. These programs have involved the establishing of new school libraries, building of new schools, publishing of local-language children's books, and training of teachers on literacy education and supporting girls throughout their academic careers. Since their establishment in 2000, Room to Read has come to the aid of over 9 million children and has grown to maintain 50 Room to Read programs worldwide that have helped increased global awareness of the lack of child education impoverished countries. They are currently on track to benefiting 10 million children by the end of this year with their education programs, but they need our help to make it happen.
