"A World Where Every Child is Healthy and Literate."
~ Ride for Reading
The first program in our installment of Education By Donation that we'll be introducing is Ride for Reading. Started by a former teacher and cycling-enthusiast who felt compelled to help students who don't have access to books, Ride for Reading aims to help children in low-income area become healthy and literate. Through this program volunteers are sent into towns on bikes to deliver books and speak to children about the importance of a healthy life and lifestyle. One of their hallmark events is Ride for Reading Week. During this week, volunteers from all around the country all deliver donated books to various communities throughout the week. Last year they delivered to over 50 cities from Maryland to California just last year in just a single week with the help of 1,000 volunteers who delivered over 63,000 books to children in their communities. This year, Ride for Reading week will be from May 3 to May 9 and will make mark the fourth annual occurrence of this service event.
