BSU Outreach Programs

TJ BSU participates in two main outreach programs during the year. TJ Inspire was founded in 2011, by former BSU President Michael Wattendorf, and TJ's Junior Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers was started by Vice President Azeez Abdikarim in 2014.

TJ Inspire

TJ Inspire is a mentoring program for elementary school students interested in the STEM fields. BSU members will start meetings by explaining the scientific topic or idea of the day, and then they encourage the kids to ask questions and discuss the concept so they really understand it. Then, a group activity is preformed to show the science is real life (i.e making baking soda and vinegar volcanoes, decorating cakes with treats that represent the parts of a human cell, and building air pressure rockets.) It is an awesome experience for both the mentors and the kids. The program usually runs for about four months out of the school year, and at the end all kids are invited to perform with BSU during. It is completely optional, but it is a great chance for the mentorees to see that nerds have fun both inside and outside the classroom. Finally, there is always at least one meeting dedicated to answering questions regarding TJ and the experiences of BSU members.

National Society of Black Engineers

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Junior Chapter of National Society of Black Engineers is a brand new part of BSU this year! Our goal is to use NSBE as a resource for both our high school members and elementary school students as NSBE shares interesting news from the science world, hosts conferences, provides scholarships, and is easy to join. TJ BSU is very excited to have this new part of our club, as our junior chapter is one of only eleven in Virginia.
